Play along at home with the Ice Princess “Write That Screenplay” Game! In Disney’s latest formulaic tween-empowerment fantasy, high school physics nerd Casey (Michelle Trachtenberg) confronts her no-nonsense granola single mom (Joan Cusack) over a clash of goals. Mom has been pushing Casey towards Harvard; Casey wants to use her knack for aerodynamics to become a figure-skating champ. “But Harvard was our dream,” implores Mom. And Casey responds …? C’mon, if you didn’t say, “No, Mom—it was your dream,” you’ve never seen one of the hundred Karate Kid-esque movies exactly like this, though Kim Cattrall as Casey’s coach is admittedly a hotter tough-love veteran instructor than Mr. Miyagi. It’s a harmless enough piece of piffle, though a bit silly at moments like when a dropped backpack reveals Casey’s ice skates and Mom reacts like a kilo of smack just spilled out. But even the 12-year-olds in the audience deserve better than “harmless,” and a story with a script so familiar every single person reading this paragraph could have written it.
