Jodie Foster heats up 'Princess' premiere
On an unusually nippy March afternoon, a surprise superstar appearance warmed up
the "Ice Princess" premiere.
Jodie Foster didn't just attend the Sunday screening of the Disney film. The
two-time Oscar winner graciously, cheerfully, and unusually walked the arrivals
line and spoke with media.
While Foster has been spotted at such family film affairs in the past usually
with sons Kit, 3, and Charles, 6 it's rare to see her to spend more than minimal
time on the red carpet.
"Well, (family films) are the only ones I go to, actually," she told Associated
Press Television News. "Otherwise it kind of feels like work. And (her children)
love these movies, and I love coming to the El Capitan (theater). They do a
great job. They give you the big popcorn thing that you can take home and put
toys in. (Laughs.) Things like that."
"Ice Princess" follows a math whiz (Michelle Trachtenberg) who realizes her
dream of becoming a first-class ice skater.
Foster said the last time she was on the ice was with one of her children.
"It was pretty horrible. I took my son skating, and he didn't understand. He was
3, and he just thought I was going to carry him. So, he didn't even try to stand
on two feet, and he just kept taking me down. So, by the end of it, I was just
black and blue everywhere on my body."
Trachtenberg said "Ice Princess" is more than just a skating film. It's the
story of a young woman who decides "to follow her dream, despite what her mom
wants for her, which is incredibly difficult but very rewarding."
That mom is played by Joan Cusack, who said the script offered something rare in
family films: fleshed-out adult characters.
"The parenting piece is about how parents, a lot of times, put their stuff on
their kids, so it's hard to see who they really are or to let them develop ...
their passions."
Developing camera-ready skating skills took its toll on the film's leads.
"Overall we had about four months, so we skated straight through filming," said
Hayden Panettiere.
"I don't look like it right now, but I'm a jock," she said. "So, to be able to
figure skate that all that sort of stuff, was just fabulous."
If the box office business is royal, don't be surprised to see this "Princess"
back on the ice. Which means there may be another generation strapping on the
skates.
"She'll probably have her own kid who wants to ice-skate or something," said
Trachtenberg. "Ten years from now, I'll be almost 30."
