Season's movie outlook offers sprinkling of bright spots

In the happy medium of spring weather, the movie theater is an exercise in extremes.

The flicks filling the pre-blockbuster summer season are either sunshine and light ("The Pacifier," "Ice Princess," "Madagascar") or doom and gloom ("The Jacket," "The Ring 2," "Sin City"). Still, a lighthearted romantic comedy

("A Lot Like Love") or two slips through the cracks, as does a comically neurotic Woody Allen movie ("Melinda and Melinda") and even the dark end of a saga ("Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith").

Once the long winter ends, be prepared for a roller coaster ride of a spring at the movie theater.

Ice Princess

Starring: Michelle Trachtenberg,

Kim Cattrall, Joan Cusack

Director: Tim Fywell

Summary: A high school bookworm (Trachtenberg) is torn between fulfilling her mother's (Cusack) dreams of Harvard and her own dreams of becoming an ice princess and competing against the best. Along the way, she finds love with the driver of the Zamboni.

Early buzz: This one has "teen hit" written all over it, but that is what Disney does best. Maybe "Ice Princess" will tap the under-served romantic comedy-on-ice market that hasn't seen action since 1992's "The Cutting Edge."
