Sexy Career Strategies
Actresses Michelle Trachtenberg and Lucy Lawless look to Eurotrip to help
them reshape the respective legacies of Buffy and Xena.
Anyone taking a trip to Europe will most likely come back saying they’ve
seen some strange things. Anyone visiting Eurotrip, however, might see
things that are even stranger: fifty fat men doing full-frontal nudity;
three directors barking out orders from behind the same camera; or Matt
Damon sporting a shaved head and tattoos.
All this, and a pair of miraculously swelling boobs, was just another day
at the office for the cast of this bawdy teenage comedy.
“I wanted something very different from Buffy”, says star and former
vampire slayer Michelle Trachtenberg. “Something that would show people
I’m eighteen years old, I’m a young woman. Each and every single page I
was turning, I was laughing hysterically. That’s the honest truth.”
Trachtenberg, who played Buffy’s little sister on the since-departed
drama, was understandably concerned about getting typecast as a genre
(read: geek) actress. She wanted to do something different, she says while
recounting how the Eurotrip script landed in her lap. But she had no idea
how different things were about to get.
“I had a tiny strap of material with some black gaffer’s tape on it
covering me,” she says of a scene that had her hitchhiking topless. It was
an important part of the transformation of Trachtenberg, who revealed her
assets along with her adult acting talents in an attempt to show the world
she was no longer a child.
How audiences react remains to be seen, but the eighteen-year-old actress
insists that she doesn’t care. “The Buffy fan base has been very loyal.
But if you love an actress, you respect their choices and go along for the
ride. If you follow me to my next project, great, if you don’t, so be it.”
If Trachtenberg is looking for some career advice, she need look no
further than co-star Lucy Lawless, who plays the
painfully beautiful Madame Vandersexxx in the movie. After six years as
Xena: Warrior Princess, she also is trying to
carve out a career beyond what her fans expect.
“The warrior princess roles just don’t stop coming,” the stunningly
beautiful 5’1’’ actress laughs. “No, that’s a lie, but they do want me to
do action, that’s for sure. They want me to be in outer space, they want
me to be killing vampires, and I had to tell them recently that I’m just
done with the gods and monsters stuff. All I want to do is comedy, that’s
what I love.”
Both actresses love comedy, in fact, and so they came to the Eurotrip set
to be under the command of not one, not two, but three directors. Alec
Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer have worked together in television
for thirteen years and are so single-minded that they often finish each
other’s sentences.
