Humor isn't a foreign idea in the loopy 'Eurotrip'
I can't pinpoint the moment when I realized what a pleasant surprise
"Eurotrip" would be.
Maybe it was when the character played by Kristin Kreuk ("Smallville")
mercilessly dump-ed her boyfriend at his graduation. Or when Matt Damon
appeared as a pierced, tattooed rocker to sing a hilarious ode to
infidelity. Or even Jacob Pitts' quick dip in the hot tub, as his
character was "looking for his car."
Honestly, I don't remember when it started. I just know that from its very
first scene, "Eurotrip" had me in stitches. And while the movie had its
uneven moments, there was never a lull in my amusement.
The movie is juvenile. It's sophomoric. It's raunchy. And it's
hysterically funny.
That was the last thing I expected to be writing about "Eurotrip." From
the first preview, emblazoned with the words "No actual Europeans were
harmed in the making of this film," I was dreading this one. So I didn't
expect much.
Then the movie opened, with Scotty (Scott Mechlowicz) graduating from high
school amid all the expected pomp and circumstance. His girlfriend, Fiona
(Kreuk), walks up, kisses him passionately and breaks up with him.
Fiona: "I just can't handle all the lying and the cheating on each other."
Scotty: "I've never cheated on you!"
Fiona: "I know. That's what makes this so hard."
The dialogue is funny; hearing it uttered by "Smallville's" perennial
sweetheart, Lana Lang, makes it even funnier.
So Scotty's bummed, but he goes to the big graduation party anyway, only
to learn that Fionna has been cheating regularly with the lead singer of a
local rock band (Damon). He sings about it at the party, sending Scotty
into a drunken stupor that ends with him telling off his German pen pal,
Mieke.
You see, he's pretty sure Mieke is like "Mike" in German. So when the
"guy" decides they should meet, Scotty sends a nasty e-mail and passes
out.
The next morning, when he realizes Mieke is a hot girl, he flips out.
Since she already has put a block on his e-mail, Scotty decides there only
is one option: Go to Europe.
So he and Cooper head over, where they meet up with two friends -
vacationing twins Jamie (Travis Wester) and Jenny (Michelle Trachtenberg,
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer").
The pair are what Cooper calls "the worst twins ever." For example, Jamie
always orders Jenny a gin and tonic, despite his twin's hatred for gin.
That the pair end up getting high and making out later doesn't subtract
from the "worst twins ever" label.
But I digress.
"Eurotrip" takes the foursome throughout Europe - London, Paris, Rome and
Amsterdam included - trying to get to Rome and Mieke.
They beat up robotic mimes, visit nude beaches and frequent kinky sex
clubs, among other things. The plot gets so loopy that it's almost
ridiculous.
But it's also amazingly funny. Pitts has a knack for comedy that's like
David Spade, minus the annoying.
Trachtenberg and Wester are terrific as mismatched twins - she a bit of a
sex kitten; he is an anal-retentive freak.
Mechlowicz has a nice, unassuming charm about him. He's funny, but also
plays the leading man well.
Add all of that to an amusing script and two hilarious cameos, by Damon
and Vinnie Jones ("Bullet-Tooth" Tony from "Snatch"), and you've got the
funniest slice of sophomoric entertainment since "Road Trip."
