Buffy's New Sister

We know what you're thinking... Dawn?! Who the hell is Dawn? Inspector
Gadget's Michelle Trachtenberg landed the role of a lifetime by simply,
well, showing up. Michelle, who has been cast to play Buffy's sister Dawn
said she visited the set to say hello to SMG, whom she'd starred with in
All My Children. "Michelle stopped by the set to visit one day and Sarah
said I should read her for Dawn," says Buffy creator Joss Whedon. "We
already had our eye on another actress, but when Michelle came in and
read, it was awesome. It was clear she was the one."
Dawn is Buffy's sister from another dimension. When the season opens Dawn
is just there and it's like she's been Buffy's sister all along. She's
living in Buffy's house, has the same last name (Summers) and shares the
same mum and dad. Everyone in the Scooby Gang has memories of a time they
spent with Dawn. Basically, it creates this very bizarre mystery that
won't be explained until episode five, when we find out that dawn is from
another dimension. Can we get more of an explanation from Dawn herself?

It sounds like getting this role was a dream come true.
Yes! I've been a big fan of Buffy for a long time. The show has such a big
cast and crew and Joss is really fun. When they asked if I wanted the
part, it was like, of course! It was a no-brainer.
Have you been watching the show since the beginning?
Yes. Totally. On my first day on the set, I was saying to myself, 'Oh
right, this is the Initiative'. I knew every set, where everything is,
where it goes. It was like, 'I know what's behind this door'. I knew the
whole thing. If you ask me a Buffy trivia question, I'll not only give you
the answer, I'll give you some of the history.
OK, can you tell us anything juicy about your role?
Well, I develop a sisterly relationship with Buffy.
So, how do you show up on Buffy?
(smiles) I develop a sisterly relationship with Buffy.
Uh-huh. Sounds like you and Sarah are close?
Yes, we're good friends. We like a lot of the same things, like Harry
Potter books. Sarah turned me on to them.
What do you think of your new co-stars, like Nicholas Brendon?
Oh my gosh! He's a cutie pie. He's just so cute. I met him on the set and
he was like, 'Hi, how ya doin'?' And I was, like, dying. He's tall. And
did I mention he's cute.
